Understanding Your Custom Katana Components

A traditional Japanese-style sword consists of numerous carefully fitted components. Understanding these parts makes the customization process easier and helps you choose the ideal combination for your preferred appearance and purpose.

Use the customization menus above to select your preferred components. If you require a combination that is not listed, enter the details in the NOTE field or contact us before ordering.

1. Choose Your Blade Steel & Construction

Hand forged Japanese katana blades with genuine hamon and polished cutting edges
Hand-forged katana blades with carefully finished surfaces and distinctive hamon.

The blade is the foundation of your custom katana. Different steels offer different characteristics in hardness, toughness, resilience, and appearance.

Heat treatment, blade geometry, and edge configuration are equally important, so the ideal steel depends on how you intend to use your sword.

Steel TypeCharacteristicsRecommended For
1060 Carbon Steel Balanced toughness and hardness with suitable heat treatment. First-time buyers and general-purpose functional swords.
1095 Carbon Steel High-carbon steel capable of good edge hardness and retention. Customers who prioritize edge performance.
T10 Tool Steel High-carbon steel well suited to selected differential-hardening processes. Clay-tempered katana with a genuine hamon.
9260 Spring Steel Silicon-alloyed steel known for resilience and toughness when properly heat-treated. Customers seeking a resilient functional blade.
Folded Steel Repeatedly folded steel creates a distinctive layered grain pattern known as hada. Collectors who value traditional-style steel patterns.
Kobuse Blade Laminated construction combining a 1095 high-carbon steel core with a folded-steel jacket. Enthusiasts interested in composite blade construction.

Note: Blade performance depends on the overall construction and heat treatment. Folded steel is not inherently superior in strength to modern monosteel.

Clay Tempering & Genuine Hamon

For compatible blade steels, we offer clay-tempered construction with a genuine hamon created through differential hardening.

Clay is applied to selected areas of the blade before quenching, creating different cooling rates between the edge and spine.

Available hamon patterns may include Suguha, Gunome, Notare, and Choji. Because genuine hamon forms during heat treatment, each blade displays natural individual variations.

Optional mirror polishing and Hazuya polishing on compatible blades can further refine the appearance of the finished steel.

Blade Groove – Bo-Hi

Choose from no groove, single groove, or double groove options where compatible. Bo-hi can reduce blade weight and influence handling characteristics.

A properly executed groove may also produce an audible sound during correct practice swings.

Blade Length & Special Geometry

The standard katana dimensions are approximately a 28-inch blade and an 11-inch handle.

We also accept many non-standard blade and handle length requests.

Selected alternative blade geometries may include:

  • Shinogi-Zukuri: Classic ridged katana profile.
  • Hira-Zukuri: Blade geometry without a prominent shinogi ridge.
  • Shobu-Zukuri: Flowing blade profile without a conventional yokote.
  • Unokubi-Zukuri: Distinctive reduced-spine geometry.
  • Kiriha-Zukuri: Traditional-style asymmetrical ridge placement.
  • O-Kissaki: Extended blade tip configuration.

Special dimensions, custom blade profiles, and non-standard grooves may require additional production time and cost.

2. Customize Your Tsuka – Handle & Wrapping

Traditional Japanese katana tsuka wrapping process with hishigami
Traditional-style tsuka-maki: wrapping the handle by hand.

The tsuka influences the sword's grip, appearance, and overall design. HanBon Forge offers a wide selection of wrapping materials, colors, samegawa, and wrapping styles.

Tsuka-Ito – Handle Cord

Select from cotton, synthetic silk, genuine Japanese silk, and leather options. Available colors include black, white, red, blue, green, brown, and other variations.

You can match the handle cord to your saya and sageo or choose a contrasting combination.

Samegawa – Genuine Ray Skin

Genuine ray skin is traditionally applied beneath the handle cord. Choose from natural and selected colored samegawa options.

A full-wrap ray-skin upgrade is also available for customers seeking a premium handle construction.

Tsuka-Maki – Handle Wrapping Style

  • Hineri-Maki: Traditional twisted wrapping with a recognizable diamond pattern.
  • Katate-Maki: A distinctive battle-wrap style with a different visual character.
  • Hishigami: Optional paper wedges used beneath the wrapping to support consistent and secure cord crossovers.

The final combination should balance appearance, comfort, and construction.

3. Design Your Saya & Sageo

Custom Japanese katana with decorative saya scabbard and sageo cord
A custom Japanese-style katana with a decorative saya and matching sageo.

The saya protects the blade during storage and completes the sword's overall appearance.

Saya – Scabbard Selection

Our available saya designs include traditional glossy and matte finishes, solid colors, decorative patterns, and selected premium material options.

  • Glossy black, matte black, and other solid-color finishes.
  • Decorative red, blue, and patterned saya.
  • Natural wood options, including selected Hualee designs.
  • Ray-skin-wrapped saya in various colors.
  • Selected buffalo-horn fittings and premium finishes.

Each saya is fitted to its corresponding blade and habaki for appropriate seating.

Sageo – Saya Cord

The sageo is the cord attached to the saya, traditionally used with the wearer's obi.

It also provides a visual detail that can complement or contrast with the tsuka-ito.

Choose from a variety of colors, materials, and patterns, including selected Japanese-style sageo cords.

4. Choose Your Katana Fittings – Koshirae

Japanese sword koshirae fittings including tsuba fuchi kashira and menuki
Katana fittings: tsuba, fuchi, kashira, and menuki.

Koshirae refers to the sword's external mountings.

These details establish the visual theme of your personalized katana and contribute to the assembly of its components.

  • Tsuba: The sword guard. Choose from iron, brass, and alloy designs, including dragon, floral, wave, animal, and classical motifs.
  • Fuchi: The metal collar fitted at the front of the tsuka.
  • Kashira: The fitting mounted at the end of the handle.
  • Menuki: Small decorative ornaments placed beneath the tsuka-ito.
  • Habaki: The blade collar, which helps the blade seat properly in the saya.
  • Seppa: Metal spacers used in the assembly around the tsuba.

We offer numerous fitting sets with traditional Japanese-inspired patterns and decorative themes.

If you want to combine compatible pieces from different sets, please provide their exact product codes for confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Swords

Designing a custom katana should be exciting, not complicated. Below are answers to the most common questions about customization, blade options, production, shipping, and after-sales service at HanBon Forge.

Customization & Production

How do I customize my own katana?

Use the customization options above to select your preferred blade, steel, blade length, groove, tsuka-ito, samegawa, saya, sageo, tsuba fittings, habaki, seppa, and other details.

If you have an additional request that is not shown in the available options, simply describe it in the NOTE field before adding the sword to your cart.

How long does it take to make a custom katana?

Most standard custom katana orders can normally be completed in approximately 5–7 business days.

Special blade lengths, unusual blade geometries, custom-colored blades, complex saya work, special polishing, or other non-standard requests require additional production time and may take several weeks.

Because every sword is made individually, production time may vary depending on the specifications of your order.

Can you make a sword that is different from the options shown on this page?

In many cases, yes. HanBon Forge accepts a wide range of special requests, including custom blade dimensions, different blade geometries, special hamon styles, custom fittings, engraving, handle configurations, and saya designs.

Please describe your requirements in the order note or contact us with reference photos or drawings. We will confirm feasibility and any additional cost before proceeding.

Can I change my customization after placing the order?

Please contact us as soon as possible and include your order number. Changes can usually be considered if production has not yet reached the relevant stage.

Once the blade has been forged, the saya has been made, engraving has been completed, or fittings have been installed, some changes may no longer be possible.

Will I receive photos of my custom sword before it is shipped?

Yes. After your custom sword is completed and passes our inspection, we normally take detailed photos and send them to you for confirmation before shipping.

Please check your email, including the spam or junk folder. You can also contact us through WhatsApp at +86 189 6379 7801.

What is included with my custom katana?

Your custom sword normally includes:

  • The completed and assembled custom sword
  • Matching saya (scabbard)
  • Free sword bag
  • HanBon Forge sword certificate

Optional accessories such as sword stands or additional items can be purchased separately.

Blade, Steel & Performance

Which steel should I choose for my custom katana?

The best choice depends on how you intend to use the sword:

  • 1060 High Carbon Steel: Tough, reliable, and a good choice for general use and entry-level functional swords.
  • 1095 High Carbon Steel: Higher carbon content with excellent hardness and edge retention.
  • T10 Steel: Popular for clay-tempered blades with a genuine hamon and excellent cutting performance.
  • 9260 Spring Steel: Known for toughness, flexibility, and durability.
  • Folded Steel: Chosen primarily for its distinctive folded grain pattern and traditional appearance.
  • Kobuse Construction: A laminated blade construction combining different steel characteristics.
Are HanBon Forge custom katana full tang and functional?

Yes. Our custom katana are constructed with full tang blades and are made as functional swords rather than decorative wall-hangers.

Cutting performance depends on the blade steel, heat treatment, geometry, and sharpening option selected. Always use an appropriate sword and suitable targets for cutting practice.

What is a clay-tempered blade and a real hamon?

Clay tempering is a differential heat-treatment process. During quenching, different areas of the blade cool at different rates, producing a harder cutting edge and a comparatively softer spine.

This process creates a genuine hamon rather than a decorative etched pattern. Hamon appearance naturally varies slightly from blade to blade because each sword is individually handmade.

Can I request a specific hamon style?

Yes. Depending on the blade selected, we can produce traditional hamon styles such as Choji, Gunome, Notare, and Suguha.

If you have a particular pattern in mind, send us a reference image. Because genuine hamon is created through heat treatment, every blade will have natural handmade variation and cannot be reproduced exactly like a printed design.

Can I order a custom blade length or special blade shape?

Yes. In addition to standard katana dimensions, we can make many non-standard blade lengths and blade geometries.

Options may include O-kissaki, Hira-zukuri, Shobu-zukuri, Unokubi-zukuri, Kiriha-zukuri, Naginata-naoshi, custom bo-hi, and other configurations.

Special dimensions or blade geometries may require additional cost and production time, so please contact us before ordering if your design differs significantly from the standard options.

Can you engrave text, names, Japanese characters, or images on the blade?

Yes. We can engrave names, dates, phrases, Japanese kanji, Chinese characters, Korean text, logos, symbols, and many other designs.

Simple, high-contrast artwork usually produces the best engraving result. For image engraving or complex artwork, please send us a clear reference file.

You can view examples on our Blade Engraving Custom Service page.

Shipping & After-Sales Service

Do you ship custom katana internationally?

Yes. HanBon Forge ships swords to many countries using international carriers and established forwarding routes.

Shipping methods, costs, customs arrangements, and delivery times vary by destination. Please see our Delivery Information page for current details.

If your country is not available during checkout, please contact us before ordering and we will confirm whether delivery is currently possible.

How long does shipping take after my sword is completed?

Delivery time depends on the destination and shipping route. Most international shipments normally arrive within approximately 1–3 weeks after dispatch.

Customs inspections, public holidays, weather, and carrier delays may occasionally extend the delivery time.

Will I receive a tracking number?

Yes. Once your sword has been dispatched and tracking information becomes available, we will send you the tracking number so you can follow the shipment.

Do I need to pay customs duties or import taxes?

Customs arrangements depend on the destination country and shipping route. For some destinations, customs charges are prepaid or handled through our forwarding service, while other countries may collect duties or taxes from the recipient.

Please check our current shipping information or contact us before ordering if you are unsure about your country.

How should I maintain my carbon steel katana?

Carbon steel can rust if exposed to moisture, fingerprints, or improper storage. After handling the blade, wipe it clean and apply a very thin protective layer of sword oil.

Store the sword in a dry environment and inspect the blade regularly, especially in humid climates.

For detailed instructions, please read our Katana Maintenance Guide .

What should I do if my sword arrives damaged or does not match my order?

Please contact HanBon Forge as soon as possible and provide your order number together with clear photos or videos showing the problem.

Our team will review the issue and provide an appropriate solution according to the circumstances and our after-sales policy.

Can a customized sword be returned or cancelled?

Because custom swords are made specifically according to the customer's selected specifications, they generally cannot be returned simply because of a change of mind once production has begun.

If there is a manufacturing defect, shipping damage, or a significant difference from the confirmed order specifications, please contact us so we can review the issue.

For complete details, please see our Returns Policy .
