1095 Folded Steel Red Blade Katana
Discover an exquisite balance of organic beauty and striking engineering with this 1095 folded steel red blade Katana, meticulously handcrafted by the master swordsmiths at Hanbon Forge. Featuring a vibrant electroplated crimson blade paired with a natural wood scabbard, this fully functional, full-tang Japanese samurai sword is designed for collectors, martial arts practitioners, Tameshigiri training, and custom sword enthusiasts.
The Blade: High-Carbon 1095 Folded Steel Artistry
The powerhouse of this Katana is its handforged 1095 folded steel blade. The steel is heated, folded, and hammered repeatedly by skilled swordsmiths. This traditional folding process helps remove impurities while creating distinctive layered grain lines, known as Hada, across the steel surface.
The blade is oil-quenched and tempered to provide flexibility and impact resistance. A specialized surface treatment gives the blade its striking red color, while the mirror-polished finish enhances its appearance.
The blade is shaped in the classical Shinogi-Zukuri style and features a defined Yokote (tip point line). A deep single Hi (fuller) runs along the blade, helping streamline the blade profile and reduce weight while also producing the characteristic whistling sound known as Tachikaze during heavy swings.
The Handle: Secure Wrap and Rich Contrast
The Tsuka (handle) is designed to provide a secure and comfortable grip. It features black genuine rayskin (Samegawa) combined with royal purple synthetic silk Tsuka-Ito. The cord is tightly wrapped in the traditional Hineri-Maki style.
The handle core is secured with two traditional bamboo Mekugi (pegs) extending through the full-tang construction. The structural fittings, including the Tsuba (guard), Fuchi (sleeve), Kashira (pommel), and Menuki (handle ornament), are made from high-quality durable alloy.
The Scabbard: Natural Wood Elegance
One of the distinctive features of this Katana is its natural wood Saya (scabbard). The wood is left unstained so its natural grain patterns remain visible. A premium clear gloss lacquer (清漆) finish helps protect the surface from moisture and scuffs while maintaining the appearance of the natural wood.
The Saya is finished with a matching purple synthetic silk Sageo cord tied around the Kurigata, creating a coordinated look with the purple Tsuka-Ito on the handle.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: Is this red blade Katana real and operational, or is it a decorative replica?
A: This is a real, battle-ready, fully operational samurai sword. It is forged from high-carbon 1095 folded steel and features oil quenching and a true full-tang construction. The sword is designed to handle Tameshigiri target cutting exercises.
Q2: How is the red color applied to the blade, and will it chip or peel off?
A: The brilliant crimson appearance is achieved using a specialized electroplating/chemical surface bonding technique over the hand-folded 1095 carbon steel. The color layer is resilient during regular draw cycles and display handling. However, extensive heavy target cutting practice can cause friction that may wear down the surface color treatment over time.
Q3: Can I order this Katana with a dull (unsharp) edge for safe form practice?
A: Yes. Although this Katana normally leaves the workshop with a sharp cutting edge, it can be customized with a completely blunt or unsharp edge for Iaido practice or home training. Customers can add the request in the order memo or contact us immediately after checkout.
Q4: What type of wood is the Saya made of, and does the natural wood require special maintenance?
A: The Saya is made from premium hardwood selected for structural stability. It is finished with a clear gloss lacquer layer (清漆), which preserves the natural wood grain while helping protect the surface from hand oils and moisture. A soft microfiber cloth can be used periodically to keep the glossy finish clean.
Q5: What comes packaged along with my Hanbon Forge sword purchase?
A: Every customized order is safely packed and shipped with a free protective cotton sword storage bag and a signed Certificate of Authenticity verifying its forged metallurgical specifications.
