Damascus Steel Katana with Brass Hawk Koshirae

This handmade Damascus steel katana features a folded steel blade with a clay-tempered edge and a visible hamon. The blade has a traditional Japanese-style profile with a medium-length kissaki and full tang construction.

The Damascus steel is folded to create a visible grain pattern across the blade. Differential hardening gives the edge a harder structure while leaving the spine more flexible. The clay-tempered hamon is polished to make the transition along the blade clearly visible.

The blade is finished with a mirror polish and fitted with a brass hawk-themed koshirae. The hawk design is carried through the tsuba and other fittings, giving the sword a distinctive look without making the mounting overly elaborate.

The handle has a wooden core covered with genuine white rayskin (samegawa) and wrapped with dark green synthetic silk ito. Copper hawk menuki are set beneath the wrapping, while two bamboo mekugi secure the full tang.

The sword is paired with a hard wooden saya finished in black high-gloss lacquer. A thick green sageo and copper kurigata complete the scabbard.

Damascus Blade and Clay Tempering
